"How many members does your church have?" is a trickier question than it seems, because the answer depends on a distinction many churches have never clearly defined: the difference between member and attendee. Here is why that distinction matters more than it seems.
What really separates a member from an attendee
An attendee is someone who regularly takes part in church life, comes to services, maybe even to a small group, but hasn't made the formal commitment, whatever the church's specific process is, baptism, new members class, membership covenant, that turns them into a member. Both are equally important pastorally, but they're different categories for administrative and governance purposes.
Why mixing up the two categories causes real problems
- Voting at assemblies. If the church has any collective decision process, usually only formal members have voting rights, and mixing up the two categories can create disputes over the legitimacy of decisions.
- Eligibility for leadership roles. Many denominations require formal membership, not just attendance, for certain leadership or deacon positions.
- Denominational reports. Many denominations ask for specific counts of formal members, distinct from the total community, and mixing the two inflates or distorts those numbers.
How to treat attendees without making them feel like outsiders
The administrative distinction doesn't need to translate into unequal pastoral treatment. A long-time attendee can be cared for, visited and included just as much as any formal member, the category is for governance, not for a hierarchy of worth within the community.
When it makes sense to review this classification
People move between the two categories over time. A useful system allows marking that transition, with a date, without erasing the previous history as an attendee, preserving the person's full journey with the church.
